"There is no such thing as bad light, there is just light waiting to be discovered" ~Ray Kellett
Growing up in North Dublin I loved to explore the local beaches and mudflats and with each wander I was exploring a little bit more of my boundaries. The views from rocky headlands, the Hill Of Howth and of huge flocks of wintering wildfowl always intrigued me. There was something in these early days that opened up a love for the landscape and instilled a sense of wonder at the natural world.
Initially more at home with paint and pencil, I began exploring the creative possibilities of photography in my late teens. I acquired my first film camera in the early 1980's and started my journey photographing, not so well I may add, the local wildlife and landscape. These days I still enjoy heading out into the countryside to shoot landscapes however my photography direction has in recent times become one of shooting mainly ‘street or candid’.
Streetphotography was something I’d generally stayed away from as it involved above all, interacting with strangers, risking awkward moments in public where with landscape, I could be on my own, nice and safe.
Through travel and practise however I’ve come to realise that there are no strangers and those awkward moments are within my own control. In Puerto Del Carmen the old men who sit by the Tapas bar at the harbour wave when they see me in the street. I have photographed them in the past, but never talked with them and yet there is the friendly wave. A quick read of a situation may tell me not to take the shot but body language and a simple thank you or gracias can very quickly disarm the wary subject and turn a negative into a positive. The streets are full of stories and I’ve become passionate about showing them.
My photography is a journey, who knows where it will end but the experience and constant learning is what keeps the passion alive. I hope you the viewer enjoys some of this journey
